Beeston Fields County Secondary School - Staff List - Compiled by Wallace Mason

This history of Beeston Fields School, and the associated history of Church Street School, were written by Wallace Mason in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
They were published originally on the BBC h2g2 site but, as they are no longer available from that source, he has kindly made the accounts available here. The research and text are entirely his.

Introduction - This Guide Entry provides a list of teachers and clerical and other staff at the Beeston Fields County Secondary School from 1932 to 1978 1 together with dates and other information where available. Most of the information is gleaned from the school log books. The list does not claim to be complete and some of the dates are best guess.

Words in italics are taken directly from the log books. Names highlighted in bold text are teachers known to the author.

Staff at the junior school between 1930 and 1943 are listed; the junior school log books for other years have not been archived. There are no log books for the infants’ school; hence there is no infants’ school staff list.

School Log Books were compiled by schools’ head teachers on a daily basis. They were hand written and can be difficult to read. They record the daily running of the school, including dates when teachers joined the school, when they left and sometimes where they went, their qualifications, absences and illnesses and very occasionally, a glimpse into their personal lives and relations between themselves and the head.

If one is lucky, a full staff list is provided at the start of each school year – see below for a typical log book entry. Usually the teacher’s full name is given together with qualifications, sometimes the form that has been assigned to them, sometimes the room. For new starters their training college is sometimes given and, very rarely, their dates of birth. Most of the teachers have ‘CA’ after their names; very occasionally, ‘UCA’. ‘CA’ means Certificated Assistant. Later ‘Q’ was used, presumably meaning Qualified 2.

The information given for each teacher reflects the amount of information available. For some, whole paragraphs can be written but for most, the data is limited to starting date and leaving date. Unless otherwise attributed, information on the death of teachers is taken from ancestry.co.uk.

In 2009, the author visited messrs Barker and Spencer (see below) to talk about Beeston Fields School. A lot of what was learned from these two is incorporated in this Guide Entry, unacknowledged to avoid burdening the text with excessive footnotes.

A great number of students went through the school as part of their training, mostly from the Loughborough Teacher Training College. Students are generally excluded from the list as there were so many of them, often staying for only a few weeks.

The school itself is discussed in BFCSS – a brief history.

CB Cottam, known as ‘Joe’ to the boys and ‘Bob’ in the staff room 4 , was the longest serving member of staff. He taught science in addition to being a form teacher. He had a serious accident in October 1935 and was off for some time. By 1949 he was formally acknowledged as Chief Assistant to the head and in charge of Form 5. A year later his wife died. He suffered much ill health in his time at the school - on 10th September 1956 he returned to duty after an absence of over nine months owing to illness - Mrs Spencer (wife of AB Spencer - see below) suggests this was due to osteomyelitis and that this left him in permanent pain. This would perhaps account for his marked shortness of temper when he returned. He eventually remarried (date not known). His new wife was Miss Elizabeth Gresham (see below). In 1960 he was made Deputy Head. On 18th March 1964, shortly after KD Roberts announced his intention to retire (see below), Mr Cottam attended an interview for a headship. Whether or not it was the headship of Beeston Fields the log does not say, merely recording that he was not successful. (Mr Spencer thinks it probably was the headship of Beeston Fields but nothing was said.). He would have been ~ 51 at the time. CB Cottam died in January 1991 at the age of 78.

KD Roberts (KDR) succeeded WA Brown as HT. KD Roberts was a graduate of London University where he read English. His previous experience included: head of Ollerton Whinney Lane Senior Mixed School in August 1935, head of Bircotes Junior School (1929), assistant in Worksop Central Mixed and Beeston Boys’ Schools (Nether Street?).

A pen-portrait of KD Roberts can be drawn from HM Inspectors 1960 report: The HT retains a kindly personal interest in the school...he knows well the detail of every part of the school’s life and keeps a careful check on them. The good relations which seem to exist between him and his staff are confirmed by the length of time many of the masters have been at the school. The HT has succeeded in creating a happy, harmonious environment throughout the school with an appropriate absence of formality. Having said that, the report continues: ...the head associates himself rather closely with the detailed running of the school....he could, with advantage, allow to certain members of the staff, more responsibility.

On 19th September 1958: Mr Jones returned from 1 day absence to attend an enquiry. Annoyingly, no further detail is given and on 10th September an obviously sceptical head records: Mr Jones returned (2 days absence). He stated that his absence on Thursday was for domestic reasons (to see his mother) and on Friday to attend a funeral. When TC Jones left, the fact is recorded and after the date a scrawled note in pencil reads: destination unknown. Glad to see the back of him, reading between the lines.
