• Occupation: licensed victualler, at the time of the census in April 1871. ⁴⁵⁵ He was then living on Pepper Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham with his wife; they employed one domestic servant.

• Occupation: licensed victualler, at the time of the census in April 1881. ⁴⁵⁶ He was then keeping the Fox & Crown Inn, Church St, Basford, Nottingham with his second wife; they employed one domestic servant. They then had a visitor, Alice Palmer.

John married Emma Burnham, daughter of Edward Burnham and Elizabeth Facer, on 6 Dec 1866 in Beeston Parish Church, Notts.⁴⁴¹ (Emma Burnham was born on 16 Mar 1842 in Beeston, Notts ^{442,443,444,445}, baptised on 24 Oct 1858 in Beeston Wesleyan Methodist ⁴⁴² and died Q1 1879 in Basford Registration District ⁴⁴⁶.)

John next married Frances Blagg on 22 Apr 1880 in Epperstone, Notts.⁶⁸ (Frances Blagg was born circa 1841 in Epperstone, Notts ⁴⁵⁷.)
