• Occupation: assistant schoolmaster, at the time of the census in April 1881. 7 He was then living with his wife and two children at Vine Cottage, Wickwar, Gloucestershire

• Occupation: teacher of drawing, at the time of the census in April 1891. 8 He was by then a widower, living at Popham Lane, North Waltham, Hampshire with one of his daughters and a nephew.

• Occupation: schoolmaster, at the time of the census in March 1901. 9 He was then living with his second wife, her widowed mother, sister and niece at The School, Wimborne, Dorset. As he is described as working on his own account, at home, this appears to be his private school.


Joseph married Emma Ward Q3 1868 in Kidderminster Registration District.1 (Emma Ward was born circa 1839 in Stone, Worcestershire 10.)


Joseph next married Alice Potter, daughter of Alfred Potter and Catherine Streets, on 25 Aug 1897 in Nottingham (St John).2 3 (Alice Potter was born circa 1857 in Boston, Lincs 11 12.)
