bullet  General Notes:

Chaiman of the London school board; son of Andrew Reed; was the founder of the type-founding firm, Sir Charles Reed & Sons Limited; interested himself in education from early life, and devoted his public life to the affairs of the London school board, of which he was chairman, 1870-81; knighted, 1874; M.P. St Ives, 1880. He was an antiquarian of some note. 4

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: letter press printer (employing about 2 persons), at the time of the census in March 1851. 5 He was then living with his wife and three children at St Thomas' Square, Hackney, Middlesex. They employed three servants and there was a monthly nurse staying with them, following the birth of their daughter.

• Occupation: type founder, employing 100 men and 40 boys, at the time of the census in April 1871. 6 He was then living with his wife and six, mostly adult, children and a nephew at Earlesmead, Hackney, Middlesex. They employed two domestic servants. He also served as a Member of Parliament and a Justice of the Peace.


Charles married Margaret Baines, daughter of Edward Baines and Charlotte Talbot, in 1844. (Margaret Baines was born circa 1818 in Leeds 7 8.)
