• Occupation: leather manufacturer, at the time of the census in April 1871. 220 He was then still single and living with his father, sister and step-mother at Lenton Abbey, Lenton, Notts.

• Occupation: leather merchant, at the time of the census in April 1881. 221 he was then living at Cavendish Lodge, Cavendish Crescent North, Nottingham with his wife, three children and five servants.

• Occupation: colliery and land owner, by the time of the census in April 1891. 222 He was then living at 9 Cavendish Crescent, Nottingham with his wife, two daughters and four servants.

• Residence: Belgravia Hotel, 72/74 Victoria St, London, at the time of the census in March 1901. 223 He was then described as a coliery owner although he was also the Liberal Member of Parliament for Chesterfield at that time so was probably in London for that purpose.


Thomas married Annie Mary Bradley Farmer, daughter of Henry Farmer and Ann Bardsley, on 29 Jul 1874 in Lenton, Notts.29 (Annie Mary Bradley Farmer was born on 24 Feb 1850 in Nottingham 174,175,176,177,178, baptised on 2 May 1869 in Lenton, Notts,179 died on 23 Aug 1904 180 and was buried in Langar, Notts.)
