2. He served in the Coldstream Guards. 11 He enlisted on 19 September 1853 at Grantham and served for 1 year 114 days during which he fought in the Crimea at Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman and Sevastopol. He was severely wounded in the left foot and discharged on a pension, returning to Beeston a hero as the only local surviving veteran.

3. He worked as an agricultural labourer at the time of the census in April 1861. He was then living with his wife, daughter and sister-in-law in Market St, Beeston, Notts 12
