• Occupation: grocer's shopman, at the time of the census in April 1881. 14 He was then living in the household of his uncle and aunt Charles & Amelia Crane. As Charles was a grocer to whom he had been apprenticed, it would appear that William was working for him. His widowed mother, his sister and several cousins were also present.

• Apprenticeship: to Charles Crane, a grocer,at the time of the census in April 1871. 101 He was then living with the crane family at 4 Toll St, Nottingham. His mother, Crane's sister-in-law and his sister and cousin were also present.
