2 Newspaper Report, Hampshire Chronicle - 6 Sep 2007 (Funeral Notice) Hampshire Chronicle - 18 Oct 2007 (Inquest). A WINCHESTER woman being investigated by the RSPCA for possible mistreatment of animals died after a fall in a retirement home.

Susan Hebblethwaite, 71, was cautioned by the charity after an RSPCA inspector and the police were called to her home in Lynch Close, Weeke, last January.

The RSPCA removed a number of animals amid concerns about their welfare. Three had to be put down.

An inquest in Winchester yesterday (October 17) heard that social services were called, and by May Miss Hebblethwaite went into the Cornerways residential home in Kings Worthy.

She had a history of self-neglect, although she was a strong-willed independent character, the hearing heard.

In August she fell down the stairs and died about 10 days later at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

Central Hampshire coroner Grahame Short said; "She was suffering non-alcohol cirrhosis of the liver and it is fair to say had been neglecting herself for some time.

"Miss Hebblethwaite was prone to falls and was falling on a more or less daily basis.

"She was very independent and wanted to do what she wanted to do. She felt she was capable of walking down the stairs."

He recorded a verdict of accidental death.
